The name of the appellation comprises the name of the producing
Village, followed by :
- the words Premier Cru (ex : Beaune Premier Cru)
- the words Premier Cru and the name of the "Climat" from
which it comes (ex : Beaune Premier Cru Marconnets)
- the name of the "Climat" and the words Premier Cru (ex
: Beaune Marconnets Premier Cru)
- the name of the "Climat" ( ex : Beaune Marconnets) ;
in this latter case, the notion of Premier Cru will be placed beneath
the appellation, for example ''Appellation Beaune Premier Cru contrôlée''.
These represent 53% of the production.
There are 13 in the Côte d'Or,
Côte Chalonnaise and Mâconnaise.
There are several regional appellations whose characteristics or
differences can be linked, either :
- through the variety (ex : Bourgogne Aligoté, Bourgogne
Pinot)
- through their method of production (ex : Crémant de Bourgogne)
- through the Village or region of production (ex : Hautes Côte
de Beaune, Bourgogne Côte Chalonnaise
- through their colour (ex : Bourgogne Rosé).

They are named after the "Climats" they come from (ex
: Chambertin, Montrachet). Very often, the Village producing these
wines has added the name of the most prestigious Village to its
own name (for example : Gevrey added Chambertin to its name in 1847,
and Puligny added Montrachet in 1879).
