The Côte de Beaune
Then, going south, one enters the Côte
de Beaune until south of Chassagne-Montrachet,
to Maranges.
The Villages here produce great red wines (Corton, Pommard
) and also great white wines which have contributed
to the fame of Burgundy : Corton-Charlemagne,
Montrachet, Meursault etc
The vineyards cover just 3000 hectares and are planted on south,
south-east or east-facing hills at a height of 220 to 300
metres.
Here, the hills are more attractive with gentle,
even slopes whose summits are less arid with more trees. The
famous "Montagne de Corton" is a typical
example.
South of the Côte de Beaune, is the "
Côte des Blancs ". Comprising Meursault,
Puligny-Montrachet and
Chassagne-Montrachet,
it is particularly suited to Chardonnay due to its marlish,
chalky, gravelly soil.
