5 Km north of Beaune,
the Village was mentioned for the first time in AD 936 but
only took on its present name of Savigny les Beaune in 1863.
The vineyards have been here for a very long time, and belonged
to the Dukes of Burgundy (in the 11th century) and then the
Cistercians.
The vines are planted at an altitude of 220 to 360 metres on
particularly chalky ground giving the Savigny wines refinement
and elegance. With an elegant bouquet, relatively powerful,
red Savigny les Beaune is often reminiscent of red fruit (blackcurrant,
raspberry, morello cherry) evolving with time towards woody
notes. They are often refered to as "feminine wines"
due to their fine, light structure. The white wines are lively
when young, and become more mellow with age.
