Clos-Vougeot
As early as the 12th century, the monks at Cîteaux worked
hard at the vines in Vougeot
which had been donated to them. Ardent tillers of the land,
they are largely responsible for the development of this magnificent
vineyard whose reputation was well established as early as
the 14th century. Among the famous people who adored this
wine, are Thomas Jefferson, President of the United Sates
and Louis XVI, King of France.
One of the rare vineyards surrounded by walls, Clos Vougeot
covers 51 hectares and is now made up of about 24 different
plots !
Bouchard Père & Fils has been one of the happy
owners since 1996, with a vineyard situated in the upper part
of Clos Vougeot, a testimony to its quest for excellence and
its veneration of the Great Burgundy wines.
Just behind the château, the Bouchard Père &
Fils vineyard is in one of the most favourable spots : at
an altitude of 250 metres, on a gentle slope of 3-4%, in full
sun; the soil is chalk - not too much clay and therefore not
as waterlogged as the lower parts - with great quantities
of grit ensuring good aeration.
Racy, elegant, harmonious, Clos Vougeot is very deep in colour.
The nose reveals complex aromas of spice, red berries typical
of Pinot Noir (blackberry, blackcurrant) with a slight touch
of wood, evolving in time towards more animal notes (fur,
musk).
A masculine wine, which reveals amplitude, elegance and remarkable
persistence on the palate.
A marvellous wine with exceptional ageing potential.
